20 years of Mexchic, 2006-2026
I have some rather sad but also very joyful news to relay. After 20 years in business, Mexchic will be closing at the end of this year. December 31st will officially end this important chapter of my life, and though I have been quietly planning this change for a few years now, it now feels like the right time for me to make it official. This closure also means that I now get to begin a new, more personal chapter which I am deeply excited for!
I started Mexchic upon moving to Mexico in 2006, at a moment when craft was under-appreciated and Mexico itself was undergoing an exciting cultural shift and design renaissance. I am so proud of what I have been able to accomplish with Mexchic, I have had my work exhibited in National Museums, sold in over fifty boutiques internationally at Mexchic’s peak right as the pandemic hit, collaborated with some of the most renowned interior designers and hotels groups in the world, had a full time staff of eight, including running a gorgeous boutique in Oaxaca for 6 years, and best of all had the privilege to collaborate with hundreds of the most talented and creative artisan and their families in the country, all while raising my daughter on my own. A lot of the time I was overwhelmed, to say the least ha! but I was also extremely happy being able to make a living doing what I love in such a special place, I wouldn’t have it any other way!My favorite part of this job though, has and always will be, getting to know you all. Mexchic was the ultimate elixir to draw the most fabulous, brilliant and creative women to my lair, many who have kept close and become great friends!! You are ALL my muses and I could not still be 20 years later writing this without your love and continued support.
Over the last few years I have been slowly building something new. I made space for myself to create in a way I hadn't in many years, taking a more personal look at craft and art through design, incorporating everything I've learned living in Mexico these last 20 years, which I jokingly call a 20 year long art residency hah, into my own language of making.Creating one of a kind pieces by hand is how I began in the late 90s, and it is now where I return. Full circle :)

I'll be launching a very small collection which I will also be selectively wholesaling (if you have a store and are interested in hearing more, please send me an email to christinahattler@gmail.com
I will be building out Christinahattler.com to hold both a portfolio of my personal art work and also the new line Christina Hattler Object along with the Mexchic archives. I will also be incorporating more retreats and workshops into the mix, as I did with Tatter in Brooklyn, along with trunk shows like the one I did in NY this past summer at the Hotel Chelsea both of which were great successes! Sign up for updates in the newsletter at the footer of the website, and will remain as it is, inconsistent and juicy, and hopefully increasingly chock full of exciting developments.
So excited for this new journey to begin, and I hope you will stay along for the ride!
